Squirrel Control in London - Get Rid Of Squirrels
Squirrels in my loft
Do I hear noises in the loft?
Loud scratching, scrabbling and noises in the loft/attic space could all be signs of a grey squirrel infestation.
Squirrels usually make their way into people’s homes at the start of winter as they want a warm insulated area to build their nests which are known as drays.
The damage that squirrels can inflict if left untreated in your loft area is significant with structural damage, gnawing of possessions and most dangerously the chewing of electrical cables and wires.
Grey squirrels were introduced to the UK from the USA in the late 19th, early 20th century. Their success has been to the detriment of our native red squirrels.
The grey squirrel has a lifespan of 9 years and is distinguished from red squirrels by their grey fur, smaller ear tufts and their larger, more robust build. Grey squirrels sit with their sizeable bushy tail arched over the back.
They are widespread throughout England and Wales, south of Cumbria, and are common in local pockets in Scotland. They are absent from the rest of mainland Europe, except for small localised populations in Italy.
Why do we have to control grey squirrels?
Grey squirrels are classed as vermin and although they do carry diseases are more renowned for their capability to cause severe damage to properties. A particular worry is a penchant for gnawing electrical wires, with the potential for house fires being an obvious threat. The grey squirrel is an aggressive species that has now pushed our traditional red squirrel to the brink of extinction and is a true pest.
The presence of squirrels is usually first noticed by loud noises and scratching in the ceiling and attic space, and it is in these areas that we implement our pest control treatment.
